I think the written word is such an amazing thing. It has the power to change, influence, guide, inspire, encourage and touch us. As an author I love being able to create worlds, go places and meet people through writing. And as a reader I love to be able to lose myself in a book in the same way. Just like it did for Belle, it makes my small corner of the world feel big. I think something magical can happen when you pick up a book and enter into that world.

But books have not only allowed me to escape to a different place. Countless times I have also been encouraged, motivated or led by a sentence, chapter or character I have read about.

I’m blessed to have a mother who has always ensured that our house is filled with books. As soon as I could read, at about the age of five, I was reading everything. I steadily devoured our bookcases at home. When we went to visit my grandparents for the weekend I would slip away to the armchair in my grandad’s office downstairs and work my way through their entire Asterix collection. I also remember reading the cereal packet every breakfast, although I don’t think the writing on the packet actually ever changed.

Fortunately, the one thing Lytham has in abundance, besides cafés, is charity shops full of second-hand books and so our library was and continues to be ever-expanding.
